Are Hair Extensions For You?

I have incredibly thick hair that – in order to tame it – I have to blow-dry it and straighten it. The whole process takes about an hour to an hour and a half and my hair is not even as long as my shoulders. I have tried growing it out – but trying to straighten that much hair is just too annoying and requires time that I don’t have.

One thing I have considered getting are hair extensions. There are three different types of extensions available and each cost a different amount. The most common type and the least expensive are the ones that are clipped or braided into the hair.

What you do is you go to a beauty supply shop and purchase the hair that you want. Then you go to your salon and they will take your hair and the extensions and then braid them together at the back of your head. Usually they do three rows across the head. They will then use 10 clips for each row to secure them in. This can cost anywhere from $100-$250. It can take as long as 8 hours to get them in and can last up to 3 months.

Another option are extensions that are sewn into your head. They do this be braiding your hair and then sewing the extensions into your hair. This can cost you as much as $1,000 and last only 3 months. Why this is more expensive it is more often used by people who have coarse hair.

Last but not least are glued extensions. However, this is one that not many people like to do because it can damage the hair. It is the most expensive and though they can last up to 6 months they can also damage your roots and you can end up by losing some of your original hair.

While I could try hair extensions to help make it longer these are best for those who have thin hair and have a problem giving it volume and growing it long. Remember to do your research. Ask around at different salons to discover how much you have to spend, how often they have done it, and what is the best place to get the hair from.
